Alzheimer's Awareness Month

November is Alzheimer's Awareness Month. Alzheimer's is a disease that affects mostly older adults, but can also affect people as young as 40. The cause is largely unknown and there is currently no cure. It is estimated that there are 16 million people suffering from Alzheimer's worldwide, with approximately 4.5 million of those people living in the United States. Alzheimer's is the eighth leading cause of death in the elderly population. The University of Pennsylvania's Alzheimer's Disease Center has published ten signs to look for in yourself or your loved ones.
1. Recent memory loss that affects job skills.
2. Difficulty performing tasks.
3. Problems with language.
4. Disorientation of time and place.
5. Poor or decreased judgment.
6. Problems with abstract thinking.
7. Misplacing things.
8. Changes in mood and behavior.
9. Changes in personality.
10. Loss of initiative.

If you or someone you know displays several of these things, you can find out more information by clicking here.

Odd thing ... I swear some of the items on this list remind me of what you are supposed to check when looking for signs of depression...

maybe old people who get alzheimer's are just depressed?

I know ... the above is silly and not medical.
